Rodeo photo lassos first

We have a June photo contest winner and this one really captures Douglas County. Kathy Port 's photo, "Hometown Rodeo: The Judgment," portrays the heritage we all celebrate during Carson Valley Days. Congratulations to Kathy for this outstanding photo. Congratulations also to Gerry Myers and Anneliese Muller who are runners-up. Stop by the museum to see the winning calendar pages.

The photos this month were among the best we have seen for the entire contest. We have selected two additional photos to use as the potential front cover for our 2009 calendar. That winner will be announced later. The calendar to date will be available for viewing and pre-ordering at the July 19 Art and Wine Festival in the parking lot of the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. The festivities start at 4 p.m. and include art to view and purchase, wine to taste, food to sample and music. Join us and order your 2009 DCHS calendar.

There has been a change of the art hanging in our Main Street Bookstore. The artists whose works are on view in July are Linda Townsend, Carolyn Denning, Anne Armijo, Maurice Herschberger and Janice Frost. The Douglas County Historical Society is grateful to the Carson Valley Art Association for letting us showcase this work.

Saturday is Student-Senior Day at the Gardnerville museum. Stop by at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. and see our featured guest, Miss Betsy Ross, as she speaks about her life in Colonial America and her fashioning of our first flag. Miss Ross will be portrayed by Young Chautauquans Katie Antti and Serena Herup.

Thursday, July 10 at 7 p.m., Guy Clifton will be our guest and will speak about his new book, "Dempsey in Nevada." Guy is a reporter with the Reno Gazette-Journal as well as the author of four books. The lecture series is free to the public with the Main Street Bookstore open both before and after the lecture. Guy's book on Dempsey will be available for sale. This book would make a great gift for any fight fans you might know.

There is so much happening this summer. Tickets for our Taste of the Towns on Aug. 2 are now available at the Gardnerville museum for $25 per person. Come in or call 782-2555 to charge tickets to your credit card. Tickets are limited.

Our next swap meet is Saturday, July 12. Booth space is available for $10 prior to the event and $20 at the event. Crafters, come get in on the fun. And the July photo contest has also begun. We plan on keeping you busy all summer long.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
