Obituary Evelyn D. Schofield

A memorial service is planned for April in Colton, Calif., for Gardnerville resident Evelyn D. Schofield, 97, who died Nov. 7, 2008.

Born Sept. 28, 1911, in Colton to C.P. and Ethel Davidson Sims, who homesteaded a ranch in Wyoming in the 1880s, she returned there and lived most of her younger life there.

Mrs. Schofield was a direct descendant of the Mormon pioneers who traveled by wagon from Nauvoo, Ill., to the Salt Lake valley in 1847. Her family again traveled by wagon in 1851 from the Salt Lake valley to the San Bernardino valley where they purchased land from the Spanish Lugo family. The settlers built Fort San Bernardino, where they lived for a year before spreading out across the valley.

In the 1940s, Mrs. Schofield worked for the Greyhound Bus line and that was where she met her second husband Holly, a driver for Greyhound for more than 40 years. They lived in Colton until his death in 1976.

Mrs. Schofield moved to Lake Tahoe to be near her two daughters and worked for Sahara Tahoe for many more years. She enjoyed traveling by Greyhound all around the country and in later years enjoyed sitting outside in the sun at her daughter's home in Gardnerville.

Mrs. Schofield was preceded in death by her parents; husband Holly Schofield; sister Pauline and brothers, Roy and George Sims.

Mrs. Schofield is survived by her son Robert Easton of Utah; two daughters, Mickie Ovrid and Patricia Morrison both of Nevada; brother Walter Sims of Riverton, Wyo.; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The memorial service will take place at the Hermosa Cemetery in Colton.
