Holbrook girl undergoing surgery for broken back

A Holbrook girl severely injured when a truck hit her bedroom is recovering from her first operation.

According to her aunt, 16-year-old Leticia Avalos went in for her first operation on July 31 where doctors worked for eight hours on her left hip and socket. The next day they worked on rebuilding her right pelvic bone and spine.

Leticia under went radiation treatment on Aug. 4 at Shriner's Hospital in Sacramento.

Angelina Chavez reported that on Monday, Leticia is bedridden and cannot talk due to the tubes that have been inserted into her throat.

Leticia was hurt July 11 when an 18-wheeler traveling south on Highway 395 ran off the road and into the bedroom of a trailer at the Holbrook Mobile Home Park.

Leticia and her sister, 12-year-old Miranda Luna, were sleeping in the back of the trailer. Miranda received 40 stitches in her face and the girls' legal guardian, Julia Luna, injured her back.
