JV/Frosh roundup: JV spikers win Galena tourney

The Douglas High junior varsity volleyball team breezed through the Galena Tournament this weekend with wins over Spanish Springs, Reed, Manogue, Carson and Galena to take the championship.


Coach David Trujillo said the team enjoyed some of its best play of the entire season in its weekend matches.


The Tigers are unbeaten on the year overall.

Douglas took a 34-20 win over Hug Thursday night, led by the Johnny Pollack in his return from a pre-season injury.


Pollack tan for 115 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries and Lucas Peterson completed 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.


Conner Dillon caught four passes for 45 yards and a touchdown and also intercepted a pass on defense.


Jesse Cruz came up with what coach Brent Eddy called the hit of the year on defense and Stanley Running Wolf had a key interception late in the game.


"(It was an) overall good effort by the kids," Eddy said. "They beat a very athletic Hug football team.

The Tiger freshmen improved to 4-0 overall with a 39-6 victory over Hug Thursday.

Douglas has outscored its opponents 129-12 this season.


Ryan Ake ran well for the Tigers Thursday behind the line of Zack Tierney, August Greth, Daniel Lundergreen, Zach Falanga, Pat Miller, Ben Reed, Jacob Fowler, Shane Connelly, Scott Rudnick and Riley Griffith.


Quarterback Austin Neddenreip had a couple of nice throws for Douglas and receiver Matthew Metz had some matching catches.Metz also had a 79-yard kick return.


Justin Dry came up with a leaping interception on defense. Tanner Egan, Kameron VanWinkle and Griffith rounded out a solid defensive effort as Douglas proceeded to lower its season points-allowed average to just three points per game.
