YERINGTON " Christopher Deyerle's defense attorney on Tuesday told a Lyon County jury in opening statements that Deyerle snapped when he learned his estranged wife was seeing another man. Deyerle, 26, is charged with first-degree murder in the May 4, 2006, fatal shooting of his wife, Heather, 24. If convicted, he faces life in prison. Manslaughter carries a term of one to 10 years.

VIRGINA CITY " John Shields, 56, is the new director of the Storey County Senior Center. Shields, whose bachelor's degree is in recreation and psychology from the University of Northern Colorado, first plans to program more activities for the seniors. He has also completed all coursework for his master's degree.

FALLON " The city's sixth Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony was held in the courtyard behind City Hall, facing the monument dedicated to that day. The high school's Junior ROTC unit paraded the colors before the 200 people gathered on the lawn.
