The R-C Morning Report: Nevada Day

Happy not quite Nevada Day. Today local, county and state offices are closed, as are the schools. That does not include the post office, national banks or federal offices, such as Social Security. While today Nevadans celebrate the founding of their state in 1864, the state's actual birthday is and has always been Halloween, which is next Wednesday.

The staff of The Record-Courier will be laboring away today as usual.

Smoke in the air from the California fires has turned the sunrise orange this morning and could linger in the Valley until a breeze picks up later this morning to carry it out. The high temperature today is supposed to be cooler, hitting 63 degrees under mostly sunny skies.

Firefighters in Southern California are starting to get lines around the largest of the big wildfires in San Diego County. The 197,990-acre Witch fire is 30 percent contained and the 84,300-acre Harris fire is 20 percent contained. Firefighters are battling a dozen active fires which have consumed half a million acres of land. An estimated 1,061 homes were destroyed by the Witch fire. The Harris fire took 97 homes, but also resulted in a death and a dozen firefighter injuries.
