Boys' Soccer: Douglas upsets Carson

The Douglas boys' soccer team remained perfect on Keith "Duke" Roman Field Monday night, knocking off top-ranked Carson 1-0 to pull into a tie for first place in the Sierra League.

The win marked the first time the Tigers had beaten the Senators in at least four years.

"We made this to be a senior game," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "The seniors all started. This is probably the last time they will play Carson. They played mature. (The Senators) weren't able to create any kind of chances.

"We dominated the tempo."

Andrew Andraski played a nice cross directly in front of the net about 15 yards out in the 21st minute and Dustin Goldade struck it with a sharp one-timer that sailed past Carson keeper Brandon Briggs for the only score of the game.

Defensively, Douglas limited Carson to just three shots on net.

The narrow configuration of the field caused both teams fits in being able to put a regular attack together.

"It's a kiddie field," Carson coach Jason Koop said. "It's a football field meant for playing football, not for soccer. It's different to play on a football field. It's too narrow to actually get things done. (The Tigers) had trouble building attacks, as did we ... There's nothing you can do but punch balls through and try to get on the end of it."

Vasquez agreed that the field changes the game, but both teams still had to play on it.

"You have to adjust to whatever the field is " whether it is a huge field like Damonte Ranch or a narrow field of dirt at Reed," he said. "The field doesn't make the game, the team makes the game. If you can't adjust, oh well."

Douglas goalie Ivan Gonzalez posted his second shutout of the season while recording two saves.

Douglas improved to 14-4 overall and 8-3 in league play while Carson dropped to 7-1-3 in league and 16-2-4 overall.
