Christmas social at Walker Center

Dec. 8, the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Christmas social at the Walker Community Center. Social hour with a no-host bar is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with dinner immediately after. The cost for this evening will be $10 per person. They will have karaoke, raffles and a dessert auction. Reservations need to be made by Dec. 4 at (530) 495-9666 or (530) 495-2508.

Deck the halls

Decorate your home and have a chance to win a cash prize in the chamber of commerce's fifth annual Let There Be Light decorating contest. Just apply at (530) 495-2508 by Dec. 4, with judging Dec. 6 between 7 and 9 p.m. A piece of advice for those entering - last year's winners, Jerry and Becky Holden, are already geared up and their home is decorated. Good luck to all of you who decorate and enter this fun contest.

Community support for the boosters

The Coleville Boosters Club threw a really enjoyable western barbecue dinner last Saturday. It makes you very proud of our community to see the attendance and fundraising support given by our residents. The student athletes served food and waited on tables. Later in the evening they were introduced and loudly applauded for their efforts this season. It sure seemed like the club raised a good amount of money for the athletes and students at the high school with the many prize drawings, as well as silent, dessert and ribs auctions. Thanks for your support.

This and that

-- Last Thursday, Irwin Heit from the Inyo-Mono Area Agency on Aging (IMAAA) gave a very comprehensive presentation on all parts of the Medicare program. There was quite a lot of information to keep you going forward in that process and not to be sidetracked by not knowing how it works. We'll hope he'll come to our community again with another presentation.

-- We want to pass on our deep sympathy to the family of Sgt. Phillip Bocks, as well as to our local Marine Corps community in this sad time. Sgt. Bocks served at the Mountain Warfare Training Center as an instructor for three years before volunteering for duty in Afghanistan.

-- The Antelope Valley Women's Club would like to thank Lions Club members, crafters and the many people who attended their bazaar for their support of the club's commitment to the community and scholarships for our local students.

-- Emergency and disaster pamphlets, provided by FEMA, the American Red Cross and Homeland Security are available for all at the Senior Center in Walker. These give good information on planning to deal with any possible happenings.

-- Remember that you can send mail later in the day than we could before. The blue mailbox adjacent to the Mountain View Barbecue has mail pickup at 9:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. on weekdays and 9:15 and 10:15 a.m. on Saturdays.

I hope everyone out there has a wonderful Turkey Day - just don't eat too much. Save room for dessert!
