Fire expected to be out tonight

The 335-acre China Springs fire is expected to be extinguished by this evening after crews successfully cut a line around it on Monday. The fire was started by human activity 12:47 p.m. Sunday and burned grass, brush, pinon juniper and timber in the rugged countryside above the southeastern Carson Valley. Most of the fire was contained to the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest with a portion on land managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and 43 acres on private land. No structures were threatened, but the fire did burn deer habitat and down to the riparian habitat along the East Fork of the Carson River. At its height, 160 firefighters battled the blaze, including five hand crews, three helicopters and eight fire engines.
