Carson Valley Days on the horizon

Staff Reports

A "Tribute to the Troops" is the theme for this year's Carson Valley Days button, now being sold by members of Soroptimist International.

The button is an integral part of Carson Valley Days, which will be June 7-10 this year.

In its 97th year, Carson Valley Days marks the beginning of summer.

Buttons are on sale at several local businesses for $1 through June 1.

This year's celebration will include the carnival at Lampe Park beginning Thursday and running through Sunday, live music at Lampe Park Friday and Saturday nights, the Saturday morning hot air balloon launch and the parade through the streets of Minden and Gardnerville to Lampe Park.

Saturday and Sunday there will also be an arts and crafts fair at Lampe Park as well as many activities and games.

The raffle will be held on Sunday and ticketholders must be present to win.

Carson Valley Days was founded by H.F. Dangberg Jr. in 1910 to promote agriculture in the Valley.

It was originally a time when all the local farmers and residents would get together in mid-June after the seasons first hay cutting.

After the first cutting, most families would be busy and wouldn't see much of each other for the rest of the summer.

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club has kept this tradition alive since the 1930s.

Proceeds from button sales go to community service projects sponsored by Soroptimists.
