Adult baseball league ready to go

With the registration deadline approaching, the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department still has room for about two more teams in the inaugural season of its adult baseball league.

"We have about four teams locked up and ready to go," recreation coordinator J.P. Albert said. "We've purchased all the scorebooks, about 15 dozen baseballs and even selected an Umpire in Chief.

"It's been very well received."

Albert said there are about two teams made of of Douglas High alumni of various ages, a team from the lake, and a team of run by a local sub sandwich shop that is already practicing out at Lampe Park.

"If we end up with those four, we'll just have two games a week," Albert said. "If we get two more teams, then we'll bump it up to three games."

The season is scheduled to start May 20 and run through mid-August with games every Sunday at Lampe Park on Field 1. Registration deadline is May 11 and the cost is $950 per team, which includes umpire fees for a 10-game season with a single-elimination tournament at the end.

"We'll be paying the umpires more than they get for high school games, so we're hoping to get some quality guys behind the plate during the summer," Albert said.

The league will run on National League rules, where the pitcher must bat and rosters can have up to 20 players. Only wood bats will be used, and Albert said Play-It-Again Sports in Northern Douglas County has a good selection for interested players.

Teams will be expected to provide their own uniforms and equipment.

Players looking to get on a team are encouraged to call the recreation department to get placed on a the free agent list.
