Soccer: Eliminators take 2nd at tourney

The Carson Valley Eliminators had quite an experience this weekend.

The U12 girls' soccer team was in the Sagebrush Soccer Tournament in Reno needing one win to qualify for the championship.

The game began, but one of Carson Valley's players still hadn't arrived.

The coaches were then informed that Katiya Resney, the missing player, had been in a major car accident and was taken by helicopter to Renown Medical with her father Russell Resney.

Many of the players had passed the accident scene (between Johnson Lane and Stephanie Way) on the way to the soccer tournament Sunday morning, not yet knowing it was one of their teammates.

The Eliminators pulled together and were determined to play for Katiya.

The team finished in second place and traveled in full soccer attire to Renown Medical following the game to watch their coaches, Vince Weaver and David Bell, present Katiya with her medal.

The entire team wished their teammate well and will continue to keep her family in their prayers.

Carson Alliance wins tourney

The Carson Alliance U16 boys' soccer team won the Sagebrush Start Up soccer tournament in Reno over the weekend.

The team included a number of Douglas High players and competed against a field of eight Northern Nevada and Tahoe area teams.

The Alliance won all four of its matches.

Carson beat the Incline Invasion 3-2 in overtime to claim the championship.

Brian Randall was awarded the team's tournament trophy as most valuable player.

In prior tournament play, the Allianca competed in the Ajax Invitational in Modesto, Calif.

Several teams in the tournament were ranked in the top 25 in Northern California and the Alliance tied two and lost one.

The Alliance, part of the Capital Soccer Club, competes in the Great Basin Youth Soccer League U15 boys division. The team is coached by Tony Eng with assistance from Phil Schlager and Chase Zumpft.

Regular season games begin in the last week of March. The team is accepting sponsorships to assist with uniform, travel and tournament expenses for the Boise Capital Performance Cup, the Comstock Shootout, the Rogue Valley Cup and the Capital Classic.
