Tyler May picked up his second win in a week and Nate Whalin picked up his second win of the season as the Douglas baseball team held Hug to one hit in each game of a doubleheader sweep with the Tigers taking two twin 10-0 victories in Reno Saturday.
Whalin struck out six and walked one to improve to 2-1 on the year and hit his fourth home run of the season to help his own effort in the first game of the day.
Ryan Pruitt and Willie Morgan each went 2-for-2 in the win with Pruitt driving in two runs and Morgan driving in one. Morgan doubled and tripled and Niko Saladis drove in a team-leading three runs.
Jordan Hadlock, Willie Morgan and Severin Nobriga each had one RBI.
In the second game, May struck out six and walked one in four innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Morgan led the way for the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Saladis knocked in two more runs on two hits and Cory Eilers doubled and drove in a run.
Jeff White went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Tim Rudnick drove in two runs while Beau Davis had Douglas' only other RBI on the day. Brandon Bernard collected a hit as well.
Douglas improved to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in league play heading into this week's crucial league match-up with Reno. The Tigers host the Huskies at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.
The Douglas softball team scored 27 runs while sweeping past the Hug Hawks in a doubleheader in Reno Saturday.
The Tigers collected 17 hits as a team in the first game as Emily Weaver, Tisha Luken and Lauren Hoppe each went 3-for-4.
Hoppe doubled and Weaver tripled as each drove in two runs while Luken added a double and triple to drive in three runs.
Katrina Morgan also drove in three runs, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Morgan Barone drove in two runs, hitting a home run along the way and Donna Judd and Stephanie Harper each drove in one.
Harper struck out three and walked one while scattering five hits and two runs over five innings of work.
In game two, Dorothy Sliva picked up her first varsity win, giving up two hits and one earned run through five innings of work. The Hawks managed to bring five runs across on three hits in the sixth but Sliva struck out six and walked two to pick up the victory.
Weaver again led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 and driving in a run.
Marina Diaz and Sliva each had two hits and an RBI and Diaz tripled. Catcher Kayla Moore doubled and drove in two runs, Hoppe drove in two and Angella Stephenson had a team-leading three RBIs.
Douglas improved to 10-4 on the year heading into Wednesday's matchup against Reno at Douglas High School at 3:30 p.m.
JV
Douglas topped Hug 20-0 Thursday with a combined no-hitter pitched by Morgan Pope and Megan Mitchitarian.
Douglas had 13 hits with Kendra Blum collecting three and Erika Evans, Rebecca Trute and Mitchitarian each getting two.
Trute and Mitchitarian each had a triple.
Jesika Lamb, Bryanna Schinzing, Ali Murray and Rachel Davis each had one hit. Schinzing's hit was a double.
Douglas took Saturday's doubleheader 25-1 and 27-0 with Pope allowing three hits in the first game and Mitchitarian allowing one in the second.
Davis pitched one inning in each game, surrending just one hit.
In the first game, Katelyn Lee had three hits with a double, Trute and Tara Paiement had two hits each and Davis, Lamb, Morgan Blomstrom, Murry and Evans each had one hit.
Douglas had 14 hits as a team in the second with Evans, Blomstrom, Lamb and Schinzing each collecting two. Evans and Schinzing each doubled and Blomstrom and Trute each tripled.
Davis, Trute, Katelyn Lee, Stephanie Lee, Paiement and Kaytlynn DiSalvo each had one.
Two meets down and the Douglas High track team is looking like it's already hit the late-season push.
The Tiger boys took second place at a four-way meet at Reno High School over the weekend while the Tiger girls took third without two of their top point scorers.
But that wasn't really what had the Tiger coaches so excited.
"As far as we were concerned it was a great showing," Douglas boys' coach Rick Brown said. "But what doesn't get shown in the results is the amount that the kids who didn't score points continued to see their times and distances improve.
"It's really not about scoring points in these early meets. It's about a season-long preparation that culminates with the regional and state championships."
Douglas girls' coach Jim Abbott agreed.
"We're in mid- to late-season form already and we're only coming off out second meet," he said. "The kids are really focusing in on improving their individual results and getting better with every day."
That's not to say that the Tigers didn't make a number of impressive statements as a team along the way against Reno, Elko and Wooster over the weekend.
"The kids that generally score points all had very good results," Brown said. "But the most encouraging thing was that the team as a whole took a step forward this weekend. It encourages us as coaches to see that the kids are really buying into the program. That's the real icing on the cake for us, to see kids who have been working at this over the course of a couple of seasons really start to come into their own.
"We took 70 kids to this meet and just about every one of them improved on their times and distances."
Among the most impressive performances of the day for Douglas were 1-2-3 sweeps in both the girls' triple jump and long jump.
Jessica Gorton won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 3.5 inches, followed by Natasha Brown in second with a 15-2.5 and Sara Isaacs in third with a 14-6.
Nicole Mehrer recorded a 34-7 to win the triple jump, folowed by Gorton at 32-7 and Brown at 32-4.
"That jump by Nicole put her way out there in the region," Abbott said. "Our jumpers did a good job across the board."
Indeed. Douglas junior Kyle Heidt won the boys' long jump (20-3) and high jump (6-0) and Will Sheerin won the triple jump with a 39-6. Camille Arend took second in the girls' high jump at 4-6 and Derrick Jenkins jumped a 5-6 to take third in the boys' high jump. Freshman Junior Pacheco also cleard 5-6 in the high jump to establish himself among Douglas' top jumpers.
"We were very pleased with the boys' high jump," Abbott said.
The boys were also impressive in the relays, sweeping the three sprint relays " the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 " and taking third in the 4x800.
"It's nice because we have so much depth to choose from," Brown said. "We've got seven guys on the 4x400 relay. We haven't had anything like that in the four years I've been at Douglas.
"There is some serious competition going on. It's the same in the 4x800. We have seven or eight very strong distance runners. It's really a nice thing to have, it give sus so much more flexibility."
The Douglas boys' also had a strong day in the individual sprints as Sheerin won the 400 in 53.5 seconds with James Leonard taking third in 55. Jake O'Farrell took third in the 200 at 23.7 seconds.
Michael Banks won the 300 hurdles in 43.2 seconds and Spencer Lewis and Jenkins swept the top two places in the 800.
Luke Wartgow also turned in a second-place finish inthe discus, throwing 118-0.5.
On the girls' side, Mehrer won the 400 in 63.2 seconds and Ne'Jae Jackson took third in the 100 at 13.4 seconds.
Whitney Lindsey placed second in the 3,200 with a time of 12:26 and Gorton took third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.6 seconds.
The Douglas 4x200 relay team took third in 2:01.1.
"We were missing a couple runners so we put a team of freshmen out there in both the 4x200 and the 4x400 and they did a really good job in their first time out."
Christine Ward also got the Tigers on the board in the throwing events with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 29-2 and a second place in the discus with a throw of 83-1.5.
The Douglas High swimming and diving teams had little trouble with North Valleys in a dual meet at the Carson Valley Swim Center Friday.
The boys' team took a 143-48 win over the Panthers, getting 1-2-3 sweeps in the 50 free and the 100 free.
Marco Hyman led the way for the Tigers, winning the 200 IM and the 200 freestyle and teaming with Paul Von, Blake Maxwell and James Spencer to win the 200 medley relay and with Angel Skelton, Bryant White and Maxwell to win the 200 freestyle relay.
Von led the sweep in the 50 free, followed by Ryan Dykes and Rene Villanueva and Spencer led the sweep in the 100 free, followed by Dykes and Scott Maxwell.
Blake Maxwell won the 500 free, followed by Colby Cain in second. Cain teamed with Von, White and Scott Maxwell to win the 400 free relay.
White took second in the 100 backstroke followed by Andy Pozun in third and Von took second in the 100 breaststroke.
The girls took a 167-112 victory over the Panthers, getting a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free and the 500 free.
Nathey Von won the 200 free, followed by Sara Sigala and Virginia Evans while Katie O'Neill won the 500 free followed by Paula Sigala and Whitney SImpson.
Dana Pardee won the 50 free followed by Amanda McRae.
McRae won the 100 free, followed by Lisa Gourlay in second.
Haley Von Schottenstein won the 100 fly with Anna Jackson taking third.
Sara Sigala won the 100 backstroke, with Evans taking third and O'Neill won the 100 breaststroke with Cassie Parr taking third.
The 400 free relay team of Simpson, Von Schottenstein, O'Neill and Sara Sigala won with a time of 4:12.81.
Simpson took second in the 200 IM and Paula Sigala took third.
The 200 medley relay team of Lisa VanDenBerg, Evans, O'Neill and Von Schottenstein took second.
The 200 free relay team of Evans, Pardee, Parr and Paula Sigala took third.
In the regional diving competition Saturday, April Epps took second place overall behind McQueen's Jenny Arnold with a score of 158.45.
Spencer took third overall in the boys' competition behind Reno's Austin Iveson and Reed's Kyle Swanson.
Villanueva and Matt Nielson took fifth and sixth respectively for Douglas.
