Ag class presentation gives pros and cons of antibiotics

"A Case of Foul Play" is a play in the style of a CSI episode investigating a possible connection in the death of a chicken and the use of antibiotics in livestock feed.

The Douglas High School agricultural issues team present the pros and cons of the issue by posing as a scientist, consumer, veterinarian, environmentalist, pharmacist and a politician in preparation for the Reno State FFA competition March 21-23.

State winners go on to the national competition in October in Indianapolis where Allyson Lammiman's ag team placed fifth last year with their skit about biodiesel featuring characters from "Gilligan's Island."

"We're supposed to show the pros and cons without taking a side. We want you to form your own opinions," said Lammiman.

The question the students ask in their skit is, "should the U.S. ban the use of antibiotics in animal feed?"

"Antibiotics are used for disease control and prevention," said Lacee Shupe, playing the part of the veterinarian. "Without antibiotics the cattle market would take a hit."

"Antibiotics are precious resources and should be used only when absolutely necessary," said Mark Gruver, presenting a scientist's opposing view.

The students are shooting for 20 performances in preparation for the state competition at the end of the month.
