Search & Rescue called out for south county fire

Douglas County Search and Rescue units are being called out to aid in traffic control and possible evacuation of Topaz Ranch Estates south of Highway 208.

The Sleeping Elephant fire is burning into the flat and is threatening homes near Quail Ridge in the southern Douglas County community.

East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts fire departments were called to man their stations at 3:50 p.m.

According to the most recent information, the Sleeping Elephant fire is at 4 acres burning in grass and brush about a mile south of State Route 208.

One structure is immediately threatened with about 50 more nearby.

The fire was caused by several lightning strikes in the area.

Two air tankers and three helicopters are working on the fire, but the fire is continuing to spread.

The Record-Courier has a reporter and photographer headed to the scene.
