Airport weight limit questions

We understand the motivation behind allowing large aircraft to land at Minden-Tahoe Airport with prior permission. Finding out how many overweight aircraft even want to land at the airport during the course of a year seems like a valid scientific pursuit.

We would heartily endorse the idea if over the past two decades, the county had dutifully enforced a voter approved initiative limiting the size of aircraft allowed to land at the airport.

Instead, the county's history has been less than stellar at enforcing resident-enacted laws.

That is not a healthy environment to begin an experiment and it is no wonder that those who oppose increasing the weight limit are suspicious of the county's motives.

Should commissioners decide to go forward with the experiment, there is little anyone can do to stop them short of going to court.

The county may proceed with their experiment and we tend to agree that the results are going to show there isn't that much overweight traffic landing at the airport.

But in a show of good faith, we suggest the county invite weight ordinance proponents to participate in monitoring the experiment.

The results of that experiment will most certainly be used by both sides when the issue goes back before voters in 2008.

And, should voters uphold the weight limit, county officials should get with the program and enforce the will of the people.
