The R-C Morning Report

The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a non-injury traffic accident at Highway 50 and Spooner Summit at about 5:54 a.m. Another accident occurred on Kingsbury Grade at about 4:17 a.m. The wind is fierce out there, so be careful driving this morning.

Carson Valley is under a winter storm warning that kicks off at 4 p.m. today and will run through 4 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service is predicting scattered snow showers this morning with light snow during the day. The snow will begin in earnest this afternoon with accumulations of 3-7 inches in the Valleys and up to 10 inches in the foothills. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are expected. There's a big burst of energy on the radar following Interstate 80, so it looks like the biggest part of whatever makes it over the mountains will pass north of us.

Heavenly is reporting 8-12 inches of new snow from this weekend's storm and windy conditions on the mountain. About a half-inch of snow remains on the ground from Sunday's snow storm. The moisture from the storm is not quite 1/10th of an inch.

The low temperature stayed above freezing last night, so down in the Valley the roads should be in pretty good shape. Go above 5,000 feet, though, and it would be a good idea to have chains or snow tires. Their required on Kingsbury and Highway 50 down to Carson and right around the Lake. Chains or snow tires are being required through Washoe Valley, which is just adding to the high wind warning there. Highway 88 is closed at Carson Pass.
