Blowing snow advisory issued for western Nevada

The National Weather Service is predicting that two storms are going to make travel very difficult in the Sierra. Right now blowing snow is reducing visibility substantially in western Carson Valley. Forecasters suggest anyone traveling in Western Nevada and especially the mountains bring chains, food, water, blankets and a flashlight.

The blowing snow advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. A winter storm watch is in effect from Monday through Tuesday. Valley snowfalls of 2-3 inches are expected. Wind gusts are running 25-30 mph. The high wind gust in the Gardnerville Ranchos so far today is 42 mph.

The Road Control Web site is swamped. Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe to Carson City. Highway 88 is closed near Carson Pass. Chains or snow tires are mandatory on Interstate 80 and Highway 50 over the summit. There is a high wind warning in effect through Washoe Valley. Call 511 for current road conditions.

There are accidents on I-80 at Cold Ranch and mile marker 7 westbound and at I-580 and South Virginia all within the last 25 minutes.
