Valley students on to state math contest

Students from Carson Valley and Pau-Wa-Lu middle schools made a good showing in the Mathcounts competition Feb. 3.

There were 15 schools from Northern Nevada and a total of 93 students competing in the preliminary contest.

Carson Valley Middle School finished second in the team competitions and will progress to the state competitions March 24 in Reno. Pau-Wa-Lu was Seventh in the team competition.

Besides the team competitions, several students also competed in individual competitions. Bart Niday was third, Selena Kaffer was fourth and Nolan Nicholson was 12th.

The top eight individuals competed in the countdown round. Bart Niday was second and Selena Kaffer was tied for third place.

The top scorers from the state Mathcounts contest in March will represent Nevada in the national competition May 11 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Mathcounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program promoting middle school mathematics achievement in the United States. With more than 23 years experience, Mathcounts is an education partnership involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
