Road controls adding up on mountain highways

As the first big winter storm of the season continues to roll into the Sierra Thursday afternoon, road controls around Northern Nevada and California are increasing.

As of 3:40 p.m. Thursday, Chains are mandatory for Highway 50 for the 6.2 mile-stretch between Glenbrook and about six miles west of South Carson City.

Snowtires or chains are required on Highway 50 for an 18-mile stretch between Kyburz and the Highway 89 junction.

Snowtires or chains are required on Highway 88 for the 25-mile stretch from just east of Hams Station California and west of Picketts Junction at Highway 89.

Chains are mandatory on Highway 89 near Bliss Park and snowtires or chains are required on Highway 28 between the 50 junction and the California state line.

Chains are mandatory on Interstate 80 for the 35.1 miles between the Drum California Exit 150 and Central Truckee Exit 186.
