Trails poster winners announced

Hike for Health is the theme of the upcoming Carson Valley Trails Association celebration 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Genoa Town Hall.

The winners of the Hike for Health Children's Art Poster Contest will be introduced and receive their prizes at the celebration. All of the posters entered in the contest will be on display at the event. The four first prize winners will receive backpacks filled with hiking supplies. The best of show winner will receive a $100 cash prize. All contest participants will receive certificates of participation. The school with the most entries was Zephyr Cove Elementary School, which will receive $250 for the school's art program.

The subject of the posters was trails, nature and hiking for health. Entry forms with details about the contest were distributed to schools in Douglas County and also were available online at www.carsonvalleytrail.org. Children's Poster Contest Chair, Lucie Johnson, reports that 322 poster contest entries were received. Following the celebration, Carson Valley Trails Association plans to display the posters at the Douglas County Public Library and also on their Web site.

The evening event will include silent and live auctions, informative displays about current and future CVTA projects, announcement of winners, live entertainment provided by the Martin & Vargas guitar duo, refreshments and a no-host bar. The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

The CVTA, founded in 1994, is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. The mission of the organization is to obtain legal public access to Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service trails and property for hiking, mountain biking and equestrian uses. The Hike for Health celebration will support and promote many ongoing and new CVTA projects including: design and construction of new trails; maintenance of existing trails; creation of signage for trailheads and trails; creation of informative trail system brochures; construction of interpretive trails at River Fork Ranch; development of the Kirman Track Trail System on the Carson River; establishment of a trail at Eagle Ridge in Genoa to connect to the Tahoe Rim Trail; connection of the Faye-Luther and Job's Peak Ranch trails and creation of the Foothill Trail to run the length of the Carson Valley.

Membership in the CVTA is open to anyone who supports the organization's mission. More information about CVTA and how to join is available online at www.carsonvalleytrails.org.
