Valley Trails Hike for Health poster contest under way

The Carson Valley Trails Association is holding its second annual Hike for Health Children's Poster Art Contest for students in grades one through 12. The subject of the posters is trails, nature and hiking for health.

Entry forms with details about the contest have been distributed to art teachers at Douglas County schools. First place winners in grades 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 will receive $50.

One best-of-show $100 prize will be awarded. Honorable mention entries will receive backpacks, and every contest participant will receive a certificate of participation. Contest details and an entry form also are available online at www.carsonvalleytrails.org, or by calling Carron Baxter, at 790-9522. The deadline for entering a poster in the contest is March 28.

Completed posters will be collected at school offices and at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden.

The winning posters will be displayed at association's annual Hike for Health celebration 5:30-8 p.m. April 22, at the Genoa Town Hall, and at the library after April 22. The presentation of awards and certificates of participation will take place at the Hike for Health event, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

At the conclusion of the awards presentation, the Hike for Health celebration will feature silent and live auctions, informative displays about current and future projects, refreshments and a no-host bar.

The event is free and open to the public; reservations are not required. The association is seeking sponsors and auction donors to support the Hike for Health celebration. The association is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. The mission of the organization is obtaining legal access to Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service trails and property for hiking, mountain biking and equestrian uses by the public.
