Volleyball sweeps Hug



The Douglas High School volleyball team swept Hug Tuesday evening to improve to 14-6 overall on the year and 4-1 in Sierra League play.


The match was a good tune-up for the Tigers, who took on No. 5 Reno Thursday night and will host No. 1 Whittell tonight.


Jessica Waggoner led the way once again for the Tigers, pounding home nine kills to go with two blocks.


Hug didn't offer up much up an attack as Douglas only blocked five shots Tuesday with Danielle Brown, Bridget Maestretti and Jennifer Stice each adding one.


The Tigers continued their strong service game as Megan Myers recorded six assists and Alex Risko added four while the Tigers had 18 as a team for the match.

Kaylee Hall, playing in her first match of the season, had two aces and Allie Hughes, also playing in her first match since injuring her arm earlier in the year, had 18 assists.


Megan Mitchell added 17 assists and two kills, Maestretti had six kills and Ali Witteman had four kills.


Alyssa Todd, Stice and Taryn Williams each had three kills.


Douglas trailed twice briefly, falling back 1-0 at the beginning of the first and second games, before coming back to route the Hawks.


Myers served up 14 consecutive points in the final game.


Bonnie Matheson and Mary Lombino led the Tigers' defense with seven and six digs respectively.

Douglas took second at the Galena tournament over the weekend, losing its first two matches of the season.


Rebecca Antti had 12 kills for the day, Mellissa Brown had 18 kills, Christine DuPuis had seven kills, Edna Meza had four kills, Katrina Morgan had five kills, Mysta Townsell had nine kills, Chloe Trudell had five kills and Jordan Marsh had two kills.


Brown had 10 aces, DuPuis added five, Marsh had seven, Lindsay McKay had three, Meza had seven, Morgan had three, Townsell had nine, Trudell had six and Marsh had 65 assists on the day.


The Tigers also beat Hug Tuesday 25-12, 25-17.

Brown had 12 aces and Jourdan Burke had two aces.


Townsell and DuPuis had an ace apiece. Burke had five kills, Dupuis had three kills, Antti had two kills, Brown had two kills and Alyssa Hamilton had one kill.


Marsh and Trudell each had nine assists.


Douglas is 15-2 overall and 7-0 in league play.
