Volleyball: Tigers thump Senators

The Douglas volleyball team jumped out to a 4-1 lead Tuesday night and didn't look back.

The Tigers picked up a sweep victory over rival Carson High School 25-18, 25-12, 25-15 in Minden to improve to 11-5 overall and 1-0 in Sierra League play.

Douglas showed marked improvement from last week's five-set loss to McQueen, especially in its passing game and its defense.

Save for a few mental lapses and a couple of miscommunications on coverage, it was a solid outing for the Tigers.

Taryn Williams led the way for the Tigers, recording eight kills while Jessica Waggoner had four kills and seven blocks.

Megan Mitchell added three blocks to go with 22 assists and Alex Risko had six kills for the Tigers.

Bridget Maestretti had three kills and three aces and Megan Myers and Danielle Brown each had an ace.

Douglas had built a 19-12 lead in the first game before Carson capitalized on a couple of Douglas errors and some solid attack shots from its outside hitters to crawl back in at 22-18.

Mitchell dished out an assist to Megan Myers, however, the Senators launched a ball out of bounds and Myers and Waggoner combined to hammer home a block to end the game.

Douglas cruised in the second set, putting together a 7-2 run through the middle and capitalizing on five Williams kills in the game.

Carson got its only lead of the night at the beginning of the third set, taking an ace and two faults on the Tigers to a 3-2 lead.

The Senators held on to it until the teams reached 10-9. Douglas tied the score after Carson was unable to return the ball on a serve. After Carson took one more lead on a kill, the Senators hit the ball long, tying the game back up at 11.

Myers hammered home an ace and Douglas didn't look back from there, going on an 11-4 run to end the match.
