Tennis: Shawhan ousted in quarterfinals



Douglas sophomore phenom Robert Shawhan made a strong charge Friday at the Northern 4A Regional Tennis Championships but couldn't overcome Galena's Chris Schwartz at the Plumas Tennis Center in Reno.


Schwartz picked ip a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Shawhan in the quarterfinals and later advanced to state with a win in the third-place match.


Shawhan wrapped up his sophomore season with a 29-4 record overall and has a 49-9 career record. He is well on his way to becoming Douglas High's all-time winningest player with two years left before graduation.


Trevor Mitchell and Josh Vega picked up Douglas' only other victory in the tournament, a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over a pair from Galena before losing in the second round to Galena's Gavin Deller and Matt Archer, the eventual regional champions.


Spike Neri and Andrew Soloman dropped a three-set match in the first round and Morgan Barone, Samantha Barns, Cesarina Ceglia-Kristy Jilk and Sarah Barnhill-Patricia Salazar all took first-round exits.
