Tennis: Ritger, Barns advance at regionals

The first day of the Northern 4A Regional Tennis Championships saw the two Tigers advance and the rest take a quick exit.


Top-seeded Amelia Ritger blew past her first-round opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, and senior Samantha Barns, the No. 7 seed, advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) win.


Barns was slated to take on Galena's Hailey Llop Friday morning while Ritger was facing a potential quarterfinal match against Spanish Springs Kim Loyd in the quarterfinals.


Cesarina Ceglia took a first-round exit, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Michelle Griffin of Spanish Springs.


On the boys' side, Douglas' Andrew Soloman took a 6-1, 6-0 loss in the first round and Marshall Jessupp lost 6-4, 6-0.


Doubles' play was set to being Friday with the boys' team of Robert Shawhan and Keagan Chipp and the girls' team of Sarah Barnhill and Lauren Seymour each poised to make deep runs into their brackets.
