Douglas storms past Wooster

Wrapping up the first go-around in Sierra League play, the Douglas boys' soccer team put together a smooth 4-0 win over Wooster Saturday afternoon in Minden.

Michael Barnes scored two goals and Eddie Vega had two assists to lead the way.

"Overall it was a great team effort," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "Everyone got to play and everyone played hard."

Douglas focused its offensive attack on exploiting the outside of Wooster's defense.

The Tigers' first goal came as Mike Gransbery received an entry pass from the outside and fed it to the opposite side to Barnes, who cracked a shot to the far post to put Douglas on the board.

"It was really a beautiful play," Vasquez said. "Barnes got a superb shot off."

Douglas got another goal shortly thereafter when Edgar Arceo was taken down just outside the box near the baseline.

The Tigers' set up like they would've for a corner kick and Barnes was left unmarked as he made a run in from the backside. Vega put the ball directly in to Barnes and Barnes again one-timed it for his ninth goal of the season.

The Tigers continued to attack the outside defense, getting their next goal as Vega passed wide to Andrew Andraski, who one-timed the ball for his first goal of the season.

Douglas wrapped up its scoring later in the game as Eddie Gonzalez collected a corner kick and volleyed the ball to Kyle Gardner, who blistered a shot off the near post and into the net.

Douglas got a strong defensive effort from Gardner, Kyle Mannschreck, Derik Cantley and Ray Kaffer and midfielder Ross Gardner won a lot of balls in the center.

Jose Alcaraz and Andraski combined on the shutout, with Alcaraz recording six saves.

Douglas has now outscored its opponents by an amazing 40 goals on the season, stretching the margin to 56-16 on the year. Heading into the second half of league play, the Tigers are 10-3 overall and 4-3 in league.

The Tiger junior varsity squad picked up a 2-0 win against Wooster Saturday as well.
