'Tis the season

Several things will be going on in the Antelope Valley before Christmas. A few are:

This Friday and Saturday, the Antelope Valley Lions Club is sponsoring a basketball tournament at Coleville High School. This will include boys' and girls' teams, both varsity and junior varsity. There are four schools in the tournament - Coleville, Big Pine, Gerlach and Lee Vining. As for our deadline, I didn't have any specific games or times, but then I have been told the first game will be played on Friday at approximately 2 p.m.

Also, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, the Antelope Valley Parent Teacher Organization will have their pancake breakfast and holiday bazaar in the elementary school cafeteria. The funds raised go directly to the school and teachers for additional teaching aids. It's a great way to have it all that day - eat breakfast, shop, and then go next door to watch some basketball.

The Northern Mono County Chamber of Commerce's Christmas social will be starting 5:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Walker Community Center. There will be a social hour with a no-host bar and a tasty ham dinner to follow, for $7.50 per person, as well as various raffles and auctions. They will also feature a Christmas karaoke for all to enjoy. Reservations must be made by Dec. 10. In addition, the chamber is having its third annual home decorating and lighting contest with judging on Dec. 12 for cash prizes, with your entry needed by Dec. 10. Both reservations and entries can be made by calling (530) 495-9666 or (530) 495-2508.

RPAC meeting

The Regional Planning Advisory Committee's monthly meeting is 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Walker Community Center. As always, residents are invited and encouraged to come, to hear what is discussed, and to give their input.

This and that

n Nov. 21, through the combined efforts of The River Ministries, the Salvation Army, and volunteers led by Gladys Arnaiz, 25 boxes of Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings were given to families who otherwise would not have had such a good holiday meal. Thank you to all those who made it happen.

n The Antelope Elementary School's Wolverines basketball team has got off to a good start, winning three of their first four games in the Sagebrush League. Keep up the good work.

n Now that fishing season is over, it seems that our television is on more and has zeroed in on any football game being played. I have seen games between colleges I never heard of and have even been trying to pick winners in the pro games. My husband, Mike, is very happy with this turn of events. Actually, I'm not complaining because it's a really enjoyable way to spend time when you've got a good fire blazing, your fuzzy slippers on and a bowl of popcorn.
