Farmers' Market opens today

The Lampe Park Farmers' Market opens today, with a local bakery featured this year.

Russell's Mercantile bakery of Minden will provide baked goods for sale at the market for the 2006 season, every Wednesday through September.

"That's nice, because they're local," said Farmer's Market organizer Jana Fuller.

The market is presented by Sierra Farmers' Markets and the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department each year at Lampe Park on Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

Main attractions today, according to Fuller, are strawberries from Watsonville, tree fruit from the Central Valley in California and locally grown tomato plants.

The Farmers' Market keeps a "food, farm or dirt" policy, including "seriously fresh produce," unique gifts, kettle corn, fresh lemonade, as well as a "non-profit-for-a-great-cause" booth featuring a different organization each week.

Hours of the Farmers' Market are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday.
