Douglas splits opening two

A big fourth inning propelled the Douglas baseball team to an 11-0 win over Lowry Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Pitcher Pat Lahlum (1-0) turned in a solid varsity debut, striking out four and scattering five hits over five innings in picking up the win.

D.J. Brady and Ryan Laing each had three RBIs while Brady went 3-for-3 from the plate. Nate Whalin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Tim Rudnick, Phil Mannelly and Ryan Guzman each drove in a run.

Laing, Rudnick and Mannelly doubled in the game.

Earlier in the day, Douglas opened its season with an 11-5 loss against defending regional finalist Galena.

Douglas had the bases loaded late in the game but could not convert.

Jacob Anderson picked up the win for the Grizzlies and freshman Tyler May (0-1) took the loss, despite looking strong early against the potent Galena lineup.
