Baseball: Tigers thump Hawks

The Hug High School baseball team took a brief lead in the top of the first inning when third baseman Thomas Jensen slugged a home run deep over center field, but Douglas came back with 12 runs in the bottom of the frame on its way to a 17-1 win over the Hawks in Minden Thursday afternoon.

Jordan Hadlock and Phil Mannelly each homered in the first and Tyler May went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs to lead the Tigers at the plate.

Lefty sophomore Wyatt Graham picked up his third consecutive win on the mound with eight strikeouts and two walks while scattering two hits over five innings for Douglas.

In the first, Hadlock, the leadoff hitter, slammed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to tie the score at one.

Niko Saladis then drew a walk and later scored on a Cory Eilers double down the third baseline.

Tim Rudnick and Hadlock each drove in one more run in the inning and Willie Morgan hit a two-run single before Mannelly hit a three-run shot to right.

Graham retired 15 of the next 16 batters on the defensive side while May tripled in the second to score Rudnick and Ryan Quenga sacrificed May home.

May hit a one-run double and Beau Davis had a two-run single in the bottom of the third to close out the Tigers' scoring.

May and Rudnick each scored three runs while Saladis, Nate Whalin, Eilers, Mannelly and Ryan Pruitt each scored two.

Douglas improved to 7-3 on the year overall and 4-0 in league play.

The Tigers travel to Reno for a doubleheader against Hug at 10 a.m. Saturday.
