Digest: AYSO sign-ups continue

Carson Valley AYSO will host youth soccer sign-ups for the fall season March 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary School and March 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas High.

There will not be a registration session at the fishing derby this year.

Sign-ups are open to boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old. The season runs from the beginning of August to the middle of October.

Birth certificates must be presented for all players who did not play last year.

Cost for early registration (before March 20) is $45 for U-5, $65 for one player, $120 for two players and $40 for each additional player.

A $5 discount per family is given for those that register on-line at www.eayso.org. Instructions and more information can be found at www.eayso318.org.

After March 20, the cost is $75 per player, no exceptions.

Referee training is March 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Douglas High, March 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary and April 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Douglas High.

Coach training is scheduled for March 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Douglas High, room 601, March 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary and April 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Douglas High, room 601.

Girls softball sign-ups

The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association is hosting sign-ups for the 2006 season at the Douglas Country Parks & Recreation annex building across from Lampe Park.

The last sign-up date is Saturday (noon-3 p.m.)

Sign-up fees are $55 (ages 5-7), $60 (8 and older) and $130 maximum (family rate).

New players must bring copies of birth certificates.

Returning players should bring a completed registration form if you've already received them in the mail.

Players must be age 5 as of Jan. 1, 2006 to be eligible to play. For more information, call Patti Snyder at 265-6447.

American Legion tryouts

American Legion baseball tryouts for the 14-under squad is scheduled for Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at Lampe Park.

Tournament softball team tryouts

The Carson Valley Girls' Softball Association is hosting tryouts for its tournament teams on March 5.

The 10-under and 12-under teams will be at 11 a.mm. and the 14-under and 18-under will be at 1 p.m. at Stodick Park. All girls trying out must be registered with the Carson Valley Girls' Softball Association. For more information, call Neil Hill at 782-5299.

Chukar club fundraiser

The Carson Valley Chukar Club will host its 20th annual fundraiser March 4 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The evening starts with a a tri-tip dinner, including salad and homemade beans. Quality rifles, shotguns, fishing equipment, wildlife art and other outdoors equipment will be on hand for the raffle and auction.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m.

In the last year, Carson Valley Chukar Club donated $10,000 to the Nevada Natural Heritage Program. This is a project that utilizes satellite mapping imaging that identifies critical animal habitat that would be endangered by wildfires and subsequent cheatgrass growth. This is a multi-agency effort that includes BLM, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services and the Nevada Biodiversity Initiative. Non-federal matching funds are being paid for by several wildlife organizations.

The club also donated $1,400 for the NDOW Ruff Grouse Translocations Project and $2,120 to Advanced Telemetry Systems used to monitor and track sage grouse.

It also donated $1,000 to the Kids' Fishing Derby and supports hunter safety programs.

The event is well-attended annually as more than 600 people came last year. There will be more than 90 raffle prizes and 40 auction items. With the cost of each admission ticket, each participant receives a year's membership, a dinner and a chance to win the door prize.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for individuals under 18, although everyone under the age of 21 must be accomanied by an adult.

Carson Valley Men's Golf Club

The Carson Valley Men's Golf Club is now accepting membership applications for 2006.

The first tournament is Sunday, March 26 at the Carson Valley Golf Course and continues with tournaments on Sunday mornings until Nov. 5.

There will be a free awards banquet for all members after the final tournament.

All tournaments are handicappd and flighted.

Half marathon at Prison Hill

A half marathon and two-person relay will be conducted at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City April 29, beginning at 7 a.m.

The event will benefit Douglas County Search & Rescue and will feature a variety of prizes and awards.

Cost is $35 for a solo entry ($40 after March 31), and $60 for the relay ($70 after March 31).

Men's and women's overall winners will receive custom awards and age groups for both men and women are 15-under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-over.

MEFIYI Spring Sports Spectacular

Boys and girls, ages 5 through 16, will have an opportunity to participate in basketball, volleyball and tennis camps Monday through Friday starting April 10 and ending April 21.

Camps will focus on teaching individual fundamentals and establish teams to play competitive games.

Basketball and volleyball camps will be at Carson Valley Middle School, the tennis camp will be at Lampe Park. Cost is $85 per week for each camp and includes a camp jersey.

MEFIYI awards coming up

The second annual MEFIYI Community Choice awards banquet honoring the outstanding youth of Douglas County is scheduled for May 31 at the St. Gall Pastoral Center. The awards are organized through a grant funded by NFL Charities.

Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley.

Nominated youth must be Douglas County residents between the ages 9 and 18. Nominees must qualify in each of the following categories:

-- Academic excellence with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.

-- Athletic commitment that displays a continued participation in individual sports, team sports and other competitive recreational and enrichment activities.

-- Community service where the nominee has volunteered their time to make Douglas County a better place.

Parents, family members, teachers and community service organizations are encouraged to nominate individuals who deserve this recognition.

Carson Valley Junior Golf

Registration is open for the Carson Valley Golf Course's spring junior program.

Cost is $120 for eight weeks and the first week of the program begins in May. For more information on that, call the junior golf hotline at 265-5735 or Carson Valley Golf Course at 265-3181. Registration for the program is scheduled for March 16, 18, 24, 25 and 31 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Carson Valley Junior Golf and Douglas Country Parks & Recreation will team up to put on a series of basic clinics as well for $15 each.

Youth volleyball registration

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will take registration for athletes in fifth-grade through eighth-grade through March 10.

The season begins on April 1. Games are played on Saturdays at Carson Valley Middle School and practices will run one evening every week.

Teams will be assigned through a paper draft system, which will take place Saturday, March 18.

The cost is $50 per child and includes eight games, a single-elimination tournament, uniforms and participation awards for all.

The department is also looking for volunteers to help coach these volleyball teams and sponsors to help keep the costs down for the children. For more information, call 782-9828.

CVI spring golf outing

The 17th annual Carson Valley Inn Spring Stag is April 27-30 with golf at the two Genoa Lakes courses: The Resort course on Friday and the Lakes course on Saturday.

A Thursday evening welcoming reception and Saturday night banquet provide plenty of time to visit and swap stories.

The 36-hole scramble is limited to the first 144 paid players. There are non-cash awards for the top finishers in each flight, drawing prizes, closest-to-the-hole prizes and a souvenir tournament shirt and hat for each participant.

There's also an optional early-bird round Thursday at the Lakes Course.

Head officials sought

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is currently looking for qualified individuals for two Umpires in Chief (UIC) positions for youth and adult basketball and adult softball.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting, training, scheduling, evaluating and paying officials for each sport. In addition, each UIC will work closely with the recreation coordinator in regards to the responsibilities previously listed.

High school certifications are recommended for basketball. Previous officiating is preferred.

Parks & Recreation seeking officials

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is currently looking for qualified officials for youth and adult sports in the following programs:

Youth basketball, $18 per game (Saturdays, January-March); Youth flag football, $12 per game (Saturdays, September-November); Youth volleyball, $14 per game (Saturdays, March-May); Adult volleyball, $16 per game (Monday-Thursday, fall, winter and spring); Adult basketball, $19 per game (Monday-Friday and tournaments in the summer and fall); Adult flag football, $18 per game (Sundays, winter).

Officials must be willing to work nights and weekends and have a flexible schedule. Most games last approximately one hour. High School certification is recommended for basketball and volleyball. Parks and Recreation will train and certify for all other sports.

Previous officiating and willingness to be trained in multiple sports is preferred.
