Plans for the 2006 Tour of the California Alps - Death Ride are in full swing and volunteers are needed for the event.

AYSO sign-ups

Carson Valley AYSO will host youth soccer sign-ups for the fall season March 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas High. It is the last chance to get in on the early-bird rate for the upcoming season.

There will not be a registration session at the fishing derby this year.

Sign-ups are open to boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old. The season runs from the beginning of August to the middle of October.

Birth certificates must be presented for all players who did not play last year.

Cost for early registration (before March 20) is $45 for U-5, $65 for one player, $120 for two players and $40 for each additional player.

A $5 discount per family is given for those that register on-line at www.eayso.org. Instructions and more information can be found at www.eayso318.org.

After March 20, the cost is $75 per player, no exceptions.

Referee training is March 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a location to be determined and April 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Douglas High.

Coach training is scheduled for March 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a location to be determined and April 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Douglas High, room 601.

Carson Valley Men's Golf Club

The Carson Valley Men's Golf Club is now accepting membership applications for 2006.

The first tournament is Sunday, March 26 at the Carson Valley Golf Course and continues with tournaments on Sunday mornings until Nov. 5.

There will be a free awards banquet for all members after the final tournament.

All tournaments are handicappd and flighted.

Adult softball sign-ups

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department will take registration for summer adult softball beginning March 20 and running through April 21.

Returning teams can sign up starting March 20 and new teams can sign up after April 3.

Payment is required at the time of registration. All games will be played at Lampe Park. The women's league plays on Monday and Wednesday nights, men's B league plays on Tuesday and Thursday nights, men's C league plays on Monday and Wednesday nights and Men's D league plays on Tuesday nights.

The cost is $650 per team for Men's B and C and women's leagues (minimum of 18 games and double-elimination tournament) and $410 for men's D (minimum of 10 games and double-elimination tournament).

A mandatory manager's meeting is scheduled for April 25 at 6 p.m. for women's league and April 26 for men's. Both meetings are at the recreation annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. For more information, call J.P. Albert at 782-9828.

Hunter safety classes offered

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will host two hunter safety courses this spring.

The first will be April 1 at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 1625 8th Street, Minden, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The second will be April 8 at the sheriff's office from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For anyone under the age of 18, class registration fees are paid for by the Carson Valley Chukar Club. Anyone over 18 will be charged $5 for the class.

Since each class is limited ot about 25 students, pre-registration is required. Additionally, the completion of a hunter safety workbook must be submitted to the instructors at the beginning of each class. Students must be at least 11 years old.

Half marathon at Prison Hill

A half marathon and two-person relay will be conducted at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City April 29, beginning at 7 a.m.

The event will benefit Douglas County Search & Rescue and will feature a variety of prizes and awards.

Cost is $35 for a solo entry ($40 after March 31), and $60 for the relay ($70 after March 31).

Men's and women's overall winners will receive custom awards and age groups for both men and women are 15-under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-over.

The race is still in need of corporate and individual sponsors, raffle items and volunteer support. Call Douglas County Search and Rescue at 782-9930 for more information on donations.

MEFIYI Spring Sports Spectacular

Boys and girls, ages 5 through 16, will have an opportunity to participate in basketball, volleyball and tennis camps Monday through Friday starting April 10 and ending April 21.

Camps will focus on teaching individual fundamentals and establish teams to play competitive games.

Basketball and volleyball camps will be at Carson Valley Middle School, the tennis camp will be at Lampe Park. Cost is $85 per week for each camp and includes a camp jersey.

MEFIYI awards coming up

The second annual MEFIYI Community Choice awards banquet honoring the outstanding youth of Douglas County is scheduled for May 31 at the St. Gall Pastoral Center. The awards are organized through a grant funded by NFL Charities.

Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley.

Nominated youth must be Douglas County residents between the ages 9 and 18. Nominees must qualify in each of the following categories:

-- Academic excellence with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.

-- Athletic commitment that displays a continued participation in individual sports, team sports and other competitive recreational and enrichment activities.

-- Community service where the nominee has volunteered their time to make Douglas County a better place.

Parents, family members, teachers and community service organizations are encouraged to nominate individuals who deserve this recognition.

Carson Valley Junior Golf

Registration is open for the Carson Valley Golf Course's spring junior program.

Cost is $120 for eight weeks and the first week of the program begins in May. For more information on that, call the junior golf hotline at 265-5735 or Carson Valley Golf Course at 265-3181. Registration for the program is scheduled for March 16, 18, 24, 25 and 31 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Carson Valley Junior Golf and Douglas Country Parks & Recreation will team up to put on a series of basic clinics as well for $15 each.

Clinics are March 24 and 25 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and March 31 and April 1 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Call 782-9828 to register.

Volunteers needed for fishing derby

The 17th annual Kids' Fishing Derby is set for June 3 and 4 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

About 2,400 children ages 3-12 are expected at the two-day free event. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old or older. The derby needs about 300 to 400 volunteers to make it a successful and fun derby for all.

The volunteers help with everything from setting up the park prior to the derby, helping plant the fish in the stream, serving refreshments, weighing fish, cleaning fish, taking tickets, registering volunteers and providing information, handing out prizes, netting fish, removing hooks from the fish and distributing loaner poles to any children who do not have anything to fish with.

There are seven sessions available for tickets: 8 to 9:30 a.m., 10 to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 to 2 p.m., and a special needs session Saturday June 3 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Tickets are free but children must be registered at the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department located at 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. Registration starts April 3 and ends June 2.

CVI spring golf outing

The 17th annual Carson Valley Inn Spring Stag is April 27-30 with golf at the two Genoa Lakes courses: The Resort course on Friday and the Lakes course on Saturday.

A Thursday evening welcoming reception and Saturday night banquet provide plenty of time to visit and swap stories.

The 36-hole scramble is limited to the first 144 paid players. There are non-cash awards for the top finishers in each flight, drawing prizes, closest-to-the-hole prizes and a souvenir tournament shirt and hat for each participant.

There's also an optional early-bird round Thursday at the Lakes Course.

Parks & Recreation seeking officials

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is currently looking for qualified officials for youth and adult sports in the following programs:

Youth basketball, $18 per game (Saturdays, January-March); Youth flag football, $12 per game (Saturdays, September-November); Youth volleyball, $14 per game (Saturdays, March-May); Adult volleyball, $16 per game (Monday-Thursday, fall, winter and spring); Adult basketball, $19 per game (Monday-Friday and tournaments in the summer and fall); Adult flag football, $18 per game (Sundays, winter).

Officials must be willing to work nights and weekends and have a flexible schedule. Most games last approximately one hour. High School certification is recommended for basketball and volleyball. Parks and Recreation will train and certify for all other sports.

Previous officiating and willingness to be trained in multiple sports is preferred.
