Voter registration for primary closes soon

Douglas County residents who want to vote in the Aug. 15 primary election have until Tuesday to register, according to Douglas County's Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Griffin-Reed.

"The primary is a pretty big ballot. There are no questions, but there are a number of constitutional officers, including governor, lieutenant governor, state treasurer and controller," she said. "The primary ballots for both parties are full."

The Douglas County Clerk's office at the Minden Inn (1594 Esmeralda Ave., Minden) and the Tahoe General Services office at the Douglas County Administrative Building, (175 Highway 50, Lake Tahoe) will remain open Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. for voters registration.

"They have to register in person," Griffin-Reed said. "Mailed-in registrations won't work for the primary election at this point."

In addition to being available on the Clerk-Treasurer's Web site, sample ballots for this year's primary will be mailed next week. Early voting is scheduled for July 29 through Aug. 11 at various locations throughout Douglas County, Reed said.

She is encouraging voters to bring their completed sample ballots to the polls, filled out and ready to speed up the process.

She's also urging residents to register and vote.

"We have absentee and early voting, so there's no excuse and doesn't take that long," she said. "It's important and voters have so many options.

"We aren't anticipating a very large voter turnout but I hope I'm wrong," she said. "I'm anxious to see."
