Allow me if you would, to talk with you today about a notion espoused by many intellectual elitists and others, that only the weak, the losers and the dying need God. Maybe you have been tempted to think this.
Let me tell you a story that will illustrate the erroneous nature of this perspective.
An Olympic committee puts on an event to draw the greatest jumpers in the world.
These athletes have trained all their lives to jump really far. They are in prime condition. The best of the best of the best. You get the idea. This event is held at the Grand Canyon. These fine athletes will attempt to jump from one side to the other. If anyone could do it, they would.
Reporters following the event are sorry to announce that no one made it across, but that they made a valiant effort. They are survived by ... etc., etc., etc.
The reporters also announced great news. A bridge has been found to accommodate all those wishing to get to the other side. There will be no charge.
The life application is this. The gulf of the Grand Canyon represents the span from this earthly life to the eternal life with God.
The jumpers represent those who believe that independently and of their own merit, can earn and obtain eternal life with God.
Who can jump the Grand Canyon? No one. Many could try, and some might jump much farther than others, but no one could make it across. Don't be one of those.
The bridge is Jesus Christ who is the hope and assurance of eternal life.
Take the bridge. It's the only way across.
Jesus said, "I assure you, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life." John 5:24
