Lady Tigers win eighth out of last nine

The Douglas girls' basketball team continued its torrid march toward the playoffs Saturday with a big 55-33 win over Hug in north Reno.

It was the eighth win in the last nine games for the Tigers and also the eighth time in the last nine games that Douglas held an opponent in the 30-point range.

Monica Knight scored 12 points and Kaela Horse added eight for the Tigers.

Jessica Waggoner scored seven points, Felicia Imelli added six, Nicole Didero scored five points, Gina Pfaffenberger, Autumn Burtt and Lisa Christen each scored two and Sarah Hartley and Allie Hughes each scored one point.

The win also marked the Tigers' sixth on the road this season in seven tries, which bodes well for Douglas considering that they will most likely be on the road in the first round of the playoffs, should they qualify.

Speaking of which, Douglas needs just a win against winless Wooster on Friday to clinch a playoff spot.

It didn't take long for the Tigers to put things away Saturday, rolling out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and extended that to 29-12 by halftime.

Douglas rode a 6-0 run in the third to stretch the lead to 37-18 and cruised from there.

The Tigers improved to 12-14 overall and 8-4 in league play with the win.

JV

Douglas racked up two more wins Friday and Saturday, improving to 9-3 on the year.

The Tigers topped South Tahoe Friday 52-21 after building a 28-11 lead in the first half.

Early in the second quarter, the Tigers lost Bailee Culver to a broken ankle.

In the first quarter, Culver had five points and three steals.

Michelle Richardson led the Tigers with 21 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks.

Jaclyn Neddenriep and Jamie Henry each scored six, Katie Buffo had five with seven assists and six rebounds, Sarah Phillips scored four, Amanda Gangwish had three and Jamie Greer had two points.

Douglas came out strong against Hug Saturday as well, building a 37-9 lead through the first half. The Tigers then held the Hawks to just two points in the second half, winning 58-11.

Richardson scored 18 points and had 19 rebounds. Buffo scored 10 to go with five steals, Phillips had eight points and freshman Danyelle Heidt made her first JV appearance with eight points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Henry, Neddenriep and Gangwish each scored four and Greer had two.

FRESHMEN

The Douglas freshmen beat South Tahoe and Hug to improve to 11-1 on the year, setting up a championship showdown with Reno Tuesday night.

Douglas improved to 20-3 overall on the year, topping South Tahoe 71-15 and Hug 58-7.

Jessica Gorton scored 22 points to lead the Tigers against South Tahoe. Edna Meza added 10 points and Taryn Williams and Helen Fillmore each had eight points.

Williams led the Tigers against Hug, scoring 12 while Gorton added nine points.

Megan Michitarian, Kylie Gemmell and Melissa Brown each scored eight points.
