Today is the first day of school for Valley elementary students. All elementary schools will be open and school zones will be in effect.

Meneley Elementary School will have the honor of being first to open at 8:45 a.m., followed by Gardnerville, Minden and Scarselli at 8:55 a.m., Jacks Valley at 9 a.m. and Pinon Hills at 9:05 a.m.

A fire warning continues for Carson Valley today after a warm night. Winds expected to be between 15 and 29 mph have already started this morning.

Low humidity and dry vegetation will combine with the wind to make fires easy to start and hard to put out.

There is no lightning in the forecast, at least. The warning is in effect until 9 p.m. tonight.

Smoke in the Valley is coming from two fires burning in Yosemite. A change in the winds today should clear it out for a while.

A meeting to prepare for this weekend's Relay for Life is today at GE Energy, 1631 Bently Parkway. Team captains will meet at 7 p.m.

The actual event, which consists of a 14-hour walk in Lampe Park to celebrate Cancer survivorship, will be in Lampe Park.
