Galena volleyball takes second

The Galena High volleyball team settled for second in its own High Sierra Invitational on Saturday, losing to one of Northern California's top team teams.

Galena went 7-2 in the event, losing to Nevada Union, which is ranked in California, in pool play and in the finals in the event that featured 36 teams from California and Nevada.

"We did some really nice things," Galena coach Teresa Burrows said. "I think we're starting to jell. I think we got a little tired. It was great conditioning."

The Grizzlies went 4-1 in pool play, losing in three games to Nevada Union 18-25, 25-19, 11-15. Galena also beat Fallon in pool play 25-15, 25-20.

In the round of 16, Galena beat Whittell and then defeated St. Ignatius of the Bay Area in the quartefinals. The Grizzlies beat Fallon 25-11, 21-25, 15-12 in the semifinals before losing to Nevada Union 16-25, 14-25 in the finals.

"They're tough," Burrows said. "They have a premiere outside hitter who could pretty much put the ball wherever she wants."

Julia Mailander was named to the all-tournament team. She and Lydia Mailander led Galena's attack on the outside. Coach Burrows also praised the play of setter Kate Wallace, Jenny Burrows, sophomore middle blocker Nancy Burrows and Chelsea Appelbaum.
