John Newton Mackey

A service for John Newton Mackey, 94, a Lincoln City, Ore., resident and former Carson City resident, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Mr. Mackey died June 30, 2004, in Lincoln City of pneumonia. He was born Jan. 7, 1910, in Morrisville, Mo., to Joseph M. and Maud Duncan Mackey.

He graduated from high school in Morrisville, then attended one year of college there.

He married Billie L. Wilson Sept. 27, 1952, in Las Vegas.

Mr. Mackey worked on the family farm until he moved to California in 1934 during the Depression to work at various jobs. After his military service, he was a roofer and then became a crane operator until his retirement in 1972.

He lived in Carson City until moving to Lincoln City two weeks ago.

He volunteered at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center for five years. He enjoyed construction projects and was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his grandson David E. Hartsock.

Among his survivors are his wife of Lincoln City; son and daughter-in-law, Frank M. and Pattye Mackey of Plainfield, Conn.; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly S. and Mark Gibson of Lincoln City; sister, Elizabeth Fisher of Springfield, Mo.; grandsons Clayton Mackey and John Mackey II; granddaughter, Danielle Dargay; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

One of his family members is on the waiting list for a kidney donation, and the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Pacific View Memorial Chapel in Lincoln City is in charge of arrangements.
