Locals shine in baseball

Former Carson High standouts Ryan and Aaron Henry and Eric Melendez and former Dayton standout Matt Bowman all had strong efforts on Saturday in local baseball action.

Ryan Henry, who redshirted during his freshman year this past season with Division II Western Oregon, was the winning pitcher for the Yuba (Calif.) Devil Rays, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays scout team, in a 10-1 win over Castro Valley, Calif. in the Sparks Tribe Fourt of July Tournament. Henry allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking one over four innings. Melendez went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In his second game back with the Sierra Sun Devils after breaking his ankle this past season, Aaron Henry, who will be a preferred walk-on at the University of Nevada, had two hits and an RBI in a 7-6 loss to Napa, Calif., in the semifinals of the Reno Knights Fourth of July Tournament.

Bowman, who also plans to walk on at Nevada, belted a double and a home run for the Sun Devils, who will play in the third place game at 2 p.m. today at Reno High. Yuba will play at 2 p.m. today at Damonte Ranch.
