Cardinals surprise Doc Stewart's

The Doc Stewart's baseball team isn't used to losing on their home field.

But that didn't matter to the Carson Cardinals. The Cardinals surprised the host team by beating Doc Stewart's 8-4 in their own tournament on Friday in Roseburg, Ore. The Cardinals scored five runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-3 deficit and Ryan Henry pitched a complete game for the win.

"For the most part we pretty much outplayed them," Cardinals coach Steve Cook said. "We got real good hitting up and down the lineup and Ryan did a great job on the hill."

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Logan Parsley's RBI single. Doc Stewart's tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second and had the bases loaded with no outs.

But Henry got out of the jam when Carl Winter turned a double play at third. He touched third and threw home to Tony Teixeira, who applied the tag to complete the double play. Henry then got a popup to end the inning.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the third on Cameron Leck's RBI single. In the fourth, Murph Gardner singled and scored on Andrew James' double to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Doc Stewart's scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead. The rally began with a walk on a borderline 3-2 pitch. A bloop single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases. A two-run double and a sacrifice fly gave Doc Stewart's a 4-3 lead.

Henry went on to hold Doc Stewart's to one hit over the final three innings and finished with a six-hitter.

In the sixth, Parsley singled and Jeff Hurzel followed with a sacrifice bunt. Aaron Henry singled and stole second, with Parsley scoring on the play. James singled home Henry and Carl Winter followed with a single. Leck delivered a two-run double and Teixeira followed with an RBI single.

James was 3-for-4 and had seven assists at shortstop. Leck was 2-for-4 with three RBI and also had an outstanding defensive game at first base. Parsley had two hits and Mike Handley doubled for the Cardinals, who conclude division play at 1 p.m. today against the Bay Area Rams of Coos Bay, Ore. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
