Carson boys fall to Colorado power

Staff Reports

The Carson High boys basketball team couldn't overcome a tough start and a bigger team in Colorado powerhouse Thunder Ridge on Thursday at the Rail City Classic.

The defending 5A Colorado state champion defeated Carson 66-49 after taking a 15-5 lead through one quarter.

"After the first quarter, we pretty much played them even," Carson assistant coach Carlos Mendeguia.

But bigger Thunder Ridge also dominated the boards. Thunder Ridge came in with eight players 6-4 or taller on their roster, including one player at 6-8.

Thunder Ridge also featured talented point guard Cedric Hill, who has signed with Northern Arizona. Hill scored 18 points, with point guard Jeff Hurzel given the task of trying to contain him.

"Jeff did a pretty good job on him," Mendeguia said. Hurzel also scored 11 points. Brian Welch scored eight points, Kyle Bacon had seven points and Jason Alcasas and Matt Moore each added six points for the Senators, who play at 4:30 p.m. today at Reed.

MCQUEEN 71, DAYTON 63

The Dayton boys basketball team outscored McQueen 30-18 to make the score respectable in the Rail City Classic.

"The way we finished was very nice," Dayton coach Rob Streeter said. But Streeter also said his team has yet to put together four solid quarters.

"We have yet to put together a solid game," he said. Streeter also said his team played well in the second quarter, but described his team's overall play as "a little erratic. We definitely showed our inexperience."

Adam Diament scored 14 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, Matt Bowman had 13 points and Ryan Blaver added 10 points for Dayton, which plays at 3 p.m. today against Huntington Beach, Calif., at Hug.

DAYTON GIRLS 48, YERINGTON 41

Bridgett Galles scored 15 points, Amanda Sbragia had 10 points and Maggie Williams added nine points as the Dayton girls basketball team held off Yerington in their own Sutro Classic despite a subpar effort, according to Dayton coach Monica Halverson.

"We started out flat," she said. "We just had an off game. They just didn't play up to what they could."

Hattie Emm scored 22 points and Kathie Keates added nine points for Yerington.

DAYTON JV GIRLS 39, CARSON FRESHMEN 38

Hannah Works had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals, Kendra Simms scored eight points, Tiffani Barber scored six points, Brittany DeRosa had four points and nine rebounds, and Lindsay Ford had two points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Carson freshmen girls basketball team at the Dayton Sutro Tournament. Carson will play Fernley's junior varsity at 6 p.m. today.

Melanie Cox and Rebecca Monzello each had a double double in points and rebounds in the win for Dayton. Monzello scored 14 points, Cox had 12 points and Autumn Lassak added seven points for Dayton.
