Despite another strong effort, Carson High graduate Darrell Rasner was denied in his bid to tie the school record for wins for the University of Nevada baseball team.
The junior right-handed pitcher allowed just one earned run over eight innings in a complete game effort, but was the tough luck loser in a 3-2 loss on Friday at Cal State Northridge.
With 23 victories, Rasner (1-2) remains one short of the school record of 24 wins. Rasner has allowed just two earned runs through 21 innings while striking out 26 this season. Against the Matadors, Rasner scattered nine hits while striking out eight and walking none.
Northridge starter Bill Murphy (1-1) put together his best game of the young season, earning his first win by striking out 11 Wolf Pack batters while allowing only one earned run in seven innings.
The Matador offense received clutch hits from freshman Tim Dorn and junior Jason Allec. Dorn finished the game 1-for-3 with a home run while Allec had an RBI and a run.
Northridge relievers Justin Fortugno and Phil Polanco combined to hold Nevada scoreless through the final two innings. Fortugno struck out the side in the eighth and Polanco earned his second save with a hittless ninth inning.
The Wolf Pack (3-4) was led by designated hitter Mike Hass and left fielder Jeff Tolotti. Hass ended the day 2-for-3 with an RBI while Tolotti went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Northridge (6-3) will face the Wolf Pack in game two of its three game series, today at Matador Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
