Dayton loses in overtime to Sparks in Sutro Classic championship game

Jake Deen scored 17 points but it wasn't enough as Dayton lost to Sparks 69-66 in overtime in the championship game of the 20th annual Sutro Classic on Saturday at Dayton High.


Matt Bowman, Brian Lahmann and Nick McQueen each scored 12 points for the Dust Devils, who trailed most of the game until putting together a great comeback. Justin Harris' 3-pointer at the buzzer tied the game at 60 to force overtime. Once there, Dayton led only briefly, 64-62, before the Railroaders, a 4A school, held on for the win.


The Dust Devils went into the fourth quarter down by 14 and were out rebounded 17-8 in the first half. Sparks led 29-23 at halftime.


"We didn't come out ready to play, said coach Rob Streeter. "They kind of dominated the boards in the first half. We struggled in that regard all game. "


Dayton dropped to 2-1 on the season while Sparks improved to 3-0.


In the consolation final, Incline beat North Tahoe 64-59 and Bishop, Calif., beat Smith Valley 77-52 in the 5th-6th place game. The Carson JV picked up their first win of of the tournament with a 59-43 win over Whittell in the 7th-8th place game.

Joanna Hixon had 18 points and nine rebounds and Caitlin Anderson added 16 points and eight rebounds as the Galena High girls basketball team improved to 2-0.
