Carson girls basketball defeats Yerington

As could be expected the Carson girls basketball team was dominant against 3A Yerington in its opener of the McQueen Tournament.

Carson defeated Yerington 64-20 on Thursday to advance to a 6:30 p.m. game today against Bend. Ore. or Spring Creek. The Senators outscored Yerington 15-4 in the first quarter, 19-2 in the second period and 14-3 in the third quarter.

"We played pretty well, I thought," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "We played good defense. I thought Yerington would be a little better."

Croghan said his team's man defense caused Yerington problems and that its press was able to force turnovers.

Carson had a balanced attack as Tabitha Adams scored 15 points and Katie Kotter and Brittany Puzey each added 12 points. Ciarra Christian also made progress from her ankle injury, scoring eight points in limited action. Christian and Kotter each hit two three-pointers. "Her ankle's feeling pretty good," said Croghan about Christian.

The Senators held Yerington's leading scorer, Brandee Smith, to three points on one three-pointer. Heather Sam was one of the Lions' leading scorers with four points.

DAYTON BOYS 58, PROVIDENCE 48

Brian Lahmann scored 17 points and Jake Deen added 10 points as Dayton beat Providence (Burbank, Calif.) in the first round of a tournament in Bishop, Calif. The Dust Devils advanced to a semifinal game at 8 p.m. today.

Against Providence, Dayton led by 15 points going into the fourth quarter and stayed safely ahead down the stretch by hitting its free throows.

DOMINGUEZ 67, GALENA 56

The Galena boys basketball team surprised Dominguez for one quarter, but then the national power from Compton took charge in the second period in the San Diego National Tournament.

Galena led 14-9 after one quarter before Dominguez outscored the Grizzlies 24-10 in the second period to take a 33-24 halftime lead.

"The we hung with them, but the damage was done," Galena coach Tom Maurer said.

Joe Heaton had a strong effort for Galena, hitting five threes on his way to scoring 24 points. Dalton Turnbow scored eight points and David Robinson added seven points for the Grizzlies.

Heaton was also able to hold Keon Kindred, who has signed with Georgetown, to nine points.

"Heaton had a great game," Maurer said. "He played really well defensively."

Galena was also hurt by 22 turnovers. "They are very athletic," said Maurer about Dominguez. "They're very big."

The Grizzlies remain shorthanded as they are without several players, including freshman starter Derek Lorenzen and Whip Thompson, who hurt his ankle in Wednesday's tournament opener.

The Grizzlies will play their final game in the tournament this morning against Montclair Prep of Los Angeles.

DOUGLAS GIRLS

The Douglas High girls basketball team absorbed a 54-45 loss to Antelope Valley, Calif., on Thursday morning at Centennial High's Lady Bulldog Holiday Classic in Las Vegas.

Erin Brinkmeyer scored 10 points and Andrea Honer 8 points.

Antelope Valley took control of the game after Douglas went 10 consecutive possessions without scoring in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers defeated Western in the opening round 60-57 on Wednesday as Emily Haas scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Douglas played Cimarron-Memorial on Thursday night.
