Pro Picks winners

The Pinon Plaza and Carson Station winners for Week 17 of the Pro Picks contest took different routes to win their first place money of $250.

Pinon Plaza winner Cheryl Mayne of Carson City was the only player with 13 correct Sunday winners, so she didn't need the Monday night tiebreaker.

"My whole family plays the contest and have since it started, " said Mayne, who is 43 and was born in Reno. "My husband Scott and my parents Galen and Sylvia play. My dad got me started. I won once five years ago and am the only member of my family who has won. My mom did get a second once."

Mayne has owned and operated Cheryl's Nail Shoppe for 20 years. She has lived in Carson City since she was a year old.

"I pick by guessing, but I tend to favor home teams," she added. "Seems like home teams have been winning more the last month or so. I'll use my winnings to take them all to dinner and spend the rest on myself."

It took 12 Sunday winners to get into the tiebreaker for second and third place at the Plaza, and Dayton's Mike Gray took second and won $150 while Carson City's Mavis Fox came in third to win $100. There were 1,007 entries at the Plaza.

Minden's Peter Duffy won the tiebreaker to claim his $250 in winnings.

""This is my second year playing the contest," said Duffy, 56, who was born in Los Angeles. "I didn't win a thing the first year I played, but I was third once earlier this year. I sure like winning. I pick by gut. I do look at the spread and try to pick upsets, but I pick with my heart and not my brain."

Duffy moved to Minden in July 1998 from Los Angeles. He's retired after 30 years working as a data processor.

"Now I work for Employers Insurance Company of Nevada in Carson City as a records clerk," he noted. "My wife Sue is an R.N. at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. She's been a nurse for over 30 years. I've got some shopping to do and I'll use my winnings for that. It will come in handy."

Carson City's Jerry Pace Jr. took second in the tiebreaker to win $150, and third in the tiebreaker and $100 went to Carson's Darcie Ingalls. There were 1,209 entries at the Station.
