The annual Toys for Tots program is getting a big boost in Nevada, thanks to a law suit settlement between toy makers and sellers and most of the nation's states.
Toys R Us, Mattel and Little Tykes are providing $111,500 in new toys to Nevada as part of a settlement of an anti-trust lawsuit, Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said Saturday.
Nevada, 43 other states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia has accused the companies in 1997 of having an illegal agreement that limited some retailers access to certain popular toys.
The companies agreed to a settlement that did not include any admission of wrongdoing, but provided that they donate $18 million worth of toys to the states. The toys will be distributed during this holiday season, Del Papa said.
Another portion of the settlement that would provide some cash to the states, to be used to buy books and other items for children, is still awaiting a judge's approval, Del Papa said.
In a similar settlement last year, $21,000 worth of toys were donated by toy manufacturer Hasbro and distributed by Toys for Tots.
Toys for Tots is a long-running project of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
