The Fernley Senior Center Advisory Council is sponsoring a Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 6. The center is at 1170 W. Newlands Dr., Fernley. Proceeds to go to the center's building and kitchen funds.
The cook-off is open to the public. Entry fee is $25 per team, consisting of two to five persons. Chili must be cooked on the premises, pre-soaking of the beans is permitted, all prep work should be done prior to the contest. At least three gallons of chili (saving at least one quart for the judges) must be made. Access to electrical outlets is limited so it is suggested contestants bring stoves, gas grills, etc.
Cash awards will be given for first place ($75), plus trophy, second place ($50) plus trophy, and third ($25) plus trophy. The chili cook-off begins at 8 a.m., judging is at 2 p.m., awards given at 3 p.m.
Judging the contest is Tad Dunbar of News Channel 8, Lonnie Thompson, manager of the Silverado, and Robert Estes, district attorney.
Booths are available for craft, food or vendors. Set up time is 7 a.m. A $25 cash award will also be given for best decorated booth depicting Cinco de Mayo. Live entertainment, door prizes, raffles and food are featured.
