Carson Country Wrestling Honor Roll

-- Michael Crooks, junior, Galena: Straight-A student in the classroom, Crooks was near perfect on the mat during a season in which he compiled a 48-6 record in the 103-pound weight class. Crooks rallied to beat Elko's Forrest Bogue and win his first zone title, then placed second at state when he lost a rematch to Bogue.


-- Nathan Aveiro, sophomore, Dayton: Rebounded from a hyperextended elbow that knocked him out from Christmas to mid-January and placed fourth at state in the 112-pound division. He had a 30-7 record, including two wins over 3A state champion Brandon Barrett of Spring Creek. Aveiro won his second Division II title to go with wins at the Lassen and Lyon County tourneys.


-- Romaine Smokey, junior, Douglas: After sitting out last year, Smokey returned to log a 25-4 record to go with his zone runner-up finish at 119 pounds - two of his losses were to zone champion Cavin Ross of South Tahoe. Smokey was not allowed to compete at state when he was suspended from school for an alleged off-campus violation that was never substantiated.


-- Justin Sarnowski, junior, Carson: Sarnowski added to some impressive career numbers by defending his zone 130-pound title, followed by a silver medal performance at the state tournament - where he lost to defending state champ Robert Shaw of Fallon. Sarnowski was 41-10 this season and named Carson's Outstanding Wrestling for the second time in three years.


-- Justin Shine, senior, Carson: A fourth-year letterman, Shine won his first zone championship and earned his second trip to state at 135-pounds. He was 37-11 this season, coming off a junior season in which he was 18-9 but didn't get to the postseason because of a broken foot. Shine won three tournaments and lost at state to nationally ranked Chris Harris of Cimarron-Memorial.


-- Matt Reed, senior, Galena: Capped off a solid career by becoming the 4A state 140-pound champion. Reed finished with a 50-5 season record, including a runner-up finish at zone and a first-place finish in his weight class at the Ponderosa tournament in California.


-- Doug Brooks, junior, Carson: Brooks won the 140-pound gold medal at zone and finished with a 36-10 season record. He won 18 straight matches before being pinned with an opening round loss at state. Brooks received the Outstanding Wrestler award at the Bay Area's Albany Invitational, where he beat Marcus Glass of Berkeley High, who placed seventh as a 145-pounder at the California state tournament.


-- Aaron Keller, senior, Fernley: Fernley's career record holder for wins and take downs, Keller finished up as a two-time 3A state champion at 152 pounds. Keller's record this season was 54-4.


-- Branden Lamborn, senior, Carson: Lamborn placed third at zone as a junior and second as a senior. Lamborn capped off his three-year letterman at Carson with a fourth-place performance at state and a 38-10 season record.


Dustin Marriott, senior, Yerington: Marriott earned his second straight 3A state 189-pound championship. Defeated Dayton's Shane Van Zant in the state finals, 4-0.


-- Jesse Jones, senior, Galena: Second at zone, third at state in 189-pound division. A team co-captain for the Grizzlies who compiled a 34-6 record this season. Third at state in the same weight class in 1999.


-- Shane Van Zant, junior, Dayton: Even though he never weighed more than 183 pounds this season, he placed second in the 189-pound division at the 3A state tournament, losing to Yerington's Dustin Marriott. Van Zant was 33-6 this season, with two of those losses coming to Marriott, Van Zant was a champion at the Lyon County and Lassen tournaments.


-- Ben Johnson, senior, Carson: A transfer who compiled a 33-8 record as a 215-pounder, placing second at zone and fourth at state. Johnson lost an 8-6 overtime heart breaker in the semifinals after leading by one point with 30 seconds left in regulation. A state qualifier for Douglas in 1999.


-- Pat Nohr, senior, Galena: In only his second full wrestling season, Nohr compiled a 39-5 record, won the zone heavyweight title and placed second at state. He advanced to the state finals with a double overtime win.


Special achievement


Bobby Burton, senior, Fernley: Amassed a 181-16 career record and three state championships, but a hard-luck senior season ended with a shoulder separation two weeks before state.
