120 YEARS AGO

Big crowd went down to Reno last night to hear the political speaking. It required eight flat cars to accommodate the crowd, and then they had to pace pretty tight. The procession marched to the depot headed by the drum corps; and as they passed along the street were greeted with prolonged cheers.

100 YEARS AGO

George W. Lewis and August Richards escaped from the Nevada State Penitentiary Monday, chiseling a hole through the walls. Lewis had been boss of the blacksmith shop, and through this means secured tools. Lewis killed an Italian in Elko and is the son of Mrs. Bates, who has appeared many times before the parole board.

70 YEARS AGO

Yesterday afternoon Ed. Sweetland, Therman Roberts, Geo. Smith, Andy Tood, Jr. and others gazed with wonder at a picture in the sky. Looking westward from the Voltair Summit toward Lake Tahoe the mirage extended over the first summit as the foreground and pictured in every detail the range of mountains to the west of Tahoe, including the lake.

50 YEARS AGO

V&T donates land for park. Headlines. 51 acre Foley's Forest will be deeded to the city. Announcement was made before a special meeting of the city board of trustees by F.G. "Nick" Carter, chairman of the citizens park committee.

20 YEARS AGO

MINDEN - Frieda Cordes died recently at the age of 80, but she lives again as a six-year-old in a Christmas cards designed by Mimi Jobe, Carson Valley artist. It pictures the family leaving the Trinity Lutheran Church after Christmas Eve services.

10 YEARS AGO

Woman won the 21st annual World Championship Chili Cookoff at Rosamund, Calif., and Carson City attorney Bob Grayson took home $1,500 for third place.
